Painted in San Francisco circa 1982. size: 17” x 27” water color & gouache, airbrush and hand-brushed

This painting was destroyed in a house fire in 1995. Highly influenced by H.R. Giger, one of my artist heroes.

The little joke about this painting was; “IS THIS A FISH CHASING ANOTHER FISH, OR A FISH CHASING IT’S OWN TAIL?”

This painting is from the time when I first started my art. I had always drawn, and done a few paintings in my early life. However, it was not until 1979, at age 28 that I decided I would stop watching TV at night and going to my job all day, (insurance agent) and resign myself to that mediocre life. I Decided that my life had to be more than a 9 to 5 job, drinking and screwing on the weekends, and TV all night after work. So, I decided I would do some art.

At that time it never crossed my mind that anything other than a hobby would come of it. But I did know that it would at least give me a balance. I was driven to express myself. I was boiling over with something. I was becoming a mean and stupid drunk. I was very angry. (I kept very detailed diaries from 1979 through 1995, all lost in the same house fire)

In my childhood I’d seen counselors who suggested that I use art as a catharsis to express my feelings of anger and helplessness. And so I did. Doing this art has always been for my personal gratification and benefit. Still is. When friends back in the beginning days (I had some friends in those days) would criticize or laugh at my crude drawings I simply would say, “fuck you asshole” … but soon I got much better, and they were impressed with my improvement. I did art every day for 25 years and now it’s what I do for my living.

WOW! I love this picture. Seriously. It's the nicest painting I've ever seen.

I love your style of shading and colouring, really smooth and realisitic.
I love the dynamic feel of this piece. I'm just waiting for the fish to chomp down on that tail, whether it be his or another's. ;) It looks rather like an oarfish, which is pretty cool in and of itself, but you executed the piece very well. Nice work.
